A crane fell on top of a building in downtown Toronto, causing damage

The counterweight, part of the crane intended to prevent it from tipping, was located on top of residential building 8 The Esplanade after it fell about 20 feet, the Toronto Fire District Chief told CNN, Stephan Powell.

Authorities were alerted to the incident at the intersection of Esplanade and Yonge Street just after 2 p.m., he added.

Building maintenance

The condominium’s top six floors are mechanical rooms used for building maintenance, so no residential units were damaged, according to Powell.

The crane was carrying around 20,000 pounds of counterweight, which shifted causing the crane to tip over, Toronto Fire Platoon Leader Kevin Shaw told CNN partner CTV News.
“This crane is collapsing [caused] a little structural damage on the roof, but no danger to lower floors, tenants or anything and did not enter any apartment, ”Shaw told CTV.
No damage was caused to the Meridian Hall Performing Arts Center, which is connected to the Toronto Police Building said on twitter

City structural engineers were on hand to assess the damage from the crane, Powell said, adding that no injuries were reported.

CNN has contacted Del Property Management, owner of 8 The Esplanade, for comment.
