PH boxers capable of winning Tokyo gold:
MANILA, Philippines – Ideally, the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (Abap) would have wanted to send six Filipino boxers to the next Olympic Games in Tokyo.
But nonetheless, with four Tokyo Games qualifiers led by middleweight contender Eumir Marcial and Abap general secretary Ed Picson, each has a legitimate chance of winning the elusive gold.
“I think Coach Don (Abnett) will attest that we expected more, maybe one or two more, but the world qualifying tournament was canceled and they had to go to the standings,” Picson said in a comment. interview with SportsIQ.
“We are happy with the four we have. I think this is a very formidable range. All of them are very capable of winning a gold medal.
Female featherweight Nesthy Petecio, flyweight Carlo Paalam and female flyweight Irish Magno join Marcial.
As part of the preparation of the PH boxing team for the Games, the four spent time training abroad with Marcial interning in the United States while Petecio, Magno and Paalam were able to hone their skills. skills in Thailand.
Picson also expressed his gratitude to the MVP Sports Foundation for funding the National Boxers’ Training Camp.
“We are very lucky. Not all NSAs benefit from a private benefactor as generous and as concerned about our sport and our athlete as the MVP Sports Foundation, ”he said.
“It helps a lot that Mr. Pangilinan is a sports fan. We all know he enjoys watching sports and he got into this advocacy to help sports because of his love for sports. It is a real plea. ”
