BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (May 3, 2021) – Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey on Monday was named a nominee for Sports Executive of the Year by the Sports Business Journal.
Sankey is one of 10 individuals from across the sports world, and the only from the collegiate setting, to be nominated for the award.
Launched in 2008, the Sports Business Awards were established by Sports Business Journal to celebrate excellence in the business of sports. The 2021 nominees and winners are being recognized for the period from March 1, 2020 – February 28, 2021.
Sankey was widely recognized as a national leader in navigating the return to sports during the COVID pandemic. Notably, the SEC played 69 of its 71 scheduled football games during the 2020 season and successfully completed championship events in cross country and soccer during the fall of 2020.
In addition, Sankey executed a milestone media rights agreement with the Walt Disney Company that grants ABC and ESPN exclusive broadcast rights to premier SEC football and basketball events beginning in 2024-25 and continuing through 2033-34.
The Sports Business Awards ceremony, a night celebrating excellence in sports business, will be a virtual program on Wednesday, June 23 at 7 PM ET. The winners will be announced live at this event.
