EU leaders clash with Hungary over LGBT bill

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, has strongly criticized a Hungarian bill that targets the LGBT community, saying she will work to thwart it.

The Hungarian bill is a disgrace, and I have asked my responsible commissioners to write a letter to the Hungarian authorities regarding or expressing our legal concerns before the bill comes into force. This bill clearly discriminates against people on the basis of their sexual orientation, and it goes against all the values, the fundamental values of the European Union. And that is human dignity. It is equality and it is fundamental human rights. We will therefore not compromise on these principles. And I firmly believe in a European Union where you are free to love whoever you want. And I believe in a European Union which embraces diversity. It is the foundation of our values. I will therefore use all the powers of the committee to ensure that the rights of all EU citizens are guaranteed, whoever you are and wherever you live.
