Free Technology for Teachers: Type Studio

I take this week to recharge my batteries and prepare for the next session of the Practical Ed Tech virtual summer camp. Over the next few days, I’ll be highlighting some of my favorite, new, and new tools for me so far this year.

Type Studio is a new video editing tool. Yesterday when I first used it I said out loud, “Whoa! This is awesome!” What made me say it was to use the editor to cut a section of video. With video editing tools, you have to drag and select a section to remove it, or enter a section’s timestamps to remove it. In  Studio, I simply selected a few words from my video transcript and hit the delete key on my keyboard to remove a section from my video.

Type Studio creates a transcript

After reading my first paragraph, you might be thinking to yourself, “This is fine, but what if I don’t have a transcript of my video?” Type Studio creates a transcript for you when you upload your video to their editor. Depending on the length of the video, it may take a few minutes or it may be a little longer than that. Once the transcript is created, your  Studio editor will appear next to your original video. Then to cut a section of your video, you just need to select the words or phrases you want to remove and Type Studio will remove the corresponding section from the video itself.
Type Studio currently supports fifteen languages. In addition to providing tools for cropping and trimming your videos, Type Studio offers a captioning service. You can only use Type Studio to create captions and transcripts without having to edit your video at all.

Applications for education

Type Studio won’t replace tools like WeVideo or iMovie, but that’s not its purpose. Where I think it fits in my toolbox is as a tool for quickly and accurately editing video lesson recordings and recordings of things like lessons conducted in Zoom. It’s much faster and easier to just drop a few words and delete this section from my video than it is to go back to WeVideo or iMovie and try to find the right moments in the timeline to cut my video.
Type Studio will also make it easy to quickly and accurately edit the transcripts and captions of the videos I share with my students.
