This week, Marvel is finally giving the God of Evil the lead role he so richly deserves – or at least that he believes he does. But if you’re a Marvel Cinematic Universe fan, the Loki from Loki maybe not entirely familiar.
That’s because he’s not the same Loki who died at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, or ran around Sakaar with Thor and Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok, or even the same Loki fought the Dark Elves in Thor: The Dark World.
When the series was announced in 2019, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige said that Loki would resume directly from a moment in Avengers: Endgame, when the Avengers traveled back in time to visit the Battle of New York City and accidentally let Loki get their hands on the Tesseract – which he quickly used to escape somewhere and elsewhere.
And that means the Loki on Disney Plus is from a movie released almost ten years ago.
“It’s really interesting to have to undo the evolution of the character of The dark world, Ragnarok, and Infinity war“Actor Tom Hiddleston told Playserver in an interview.” It was like time travel in itself, in a weird way. Such an unusual privilege to return to a character you played 10 years ago and pick up where we left off. “
But with the Time Variance Authority involved, it’s possible that Loki’s entire timeline will come into play as the Asgardian crisscrosses history. So, just to get all of our Lokis lined up (keys), let’s do a quick recap of the best villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Loki’s first appearance is as an antagonist of his brother’s cinematic debut. In the movie, he discovered that he was not really an Asgardian, but an adopted Frost Giant, and concocted a plan to invite a Frost Giant invasion of Asgard while Odin was incapable and Thor banished, so that he can defeat his biological father to gain the approval of his adoptive father. It didn’t work, and when his plan was discovered, he chose to fall from the Bifrost and get lost in the cosmos rather than face justice.
Set the Loki moment: Tom Hiddleston’s instantly compelling performance propelled Loki to “oops, we made him too likable” villain status just in time for him to become completely megalomaniac on his next appearance.
Somewhere in the cosmos, Loki encountered a servant of Thanos who gifted him with an army and the power of an Infinity Stone (the Stone of the Spirit) to use to invade the earth and seize a another infinity stone (the Tesseract).
Loki managed to use the Tesseract to open a space-time portal so that the Chitauri invaders could spill into the Manhattan skyline, but Loki’s army and plan were stopped by the Avengers, who pulled out all the stops. united in revenge on the late Phil Coulson, whom Loki murdered. In the timeline established in the main continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is where Loki’s Conquest ends – at the end of Avengers, SHIELD takes him handcuffed.
Set the Loki moment: KNEEL.
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Loki starts Thor: The Dark World moping in Asgardian Prison after his defeat in the Battle of New York. Then, after indirectly causing the death of his mother, he is released from prison in order to help Thor and his allies defeat an invasion of the Dark Elves. Then he dies.
Or not, it turns out he faked his own death. Loki resurfaces in a The dark world credits scene where it was revealed that he had somehow disguised himself as Odin and had taken control of Asgard.
Set the Loki moment: Transform a fake death into getting rid of his father and taking his place off screen.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
The first thing that happened to Loki in Thor: Ragnarok is that Thor finds out about his plan and forces Loki to take him to where he had hid their father. Odin chooses this moment to die, which frees Thor and Loki’s very frightening older sister, Hela, from lengthy imprisonment, kicking off the film’s plot appropriately.
Hela banishes them both to the planet Sakaar, where Loki works for the tyrannical Grandmaster but ultimately helps Thor and Hulk escape Sakaar. The group evacuates Asgard before the population is destroyed during the Ragnarok Apocalypse. But before leaving, Loki steals the Tesseract from the treasure chests of Asgard, where it has been kept safe for ever. Avengers.
Set the Loki moment: Acquire help.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
This brings us to Avengers: Infinity War, when Thanos finally comes for all the Infinity Stones. At this point, Loki was still hanging out with Thor and the Asgardian refugees when Thanos showed up, grabbed the Tesseract, and executed Loki, seemingly for good.
But that’s all the water that has yet to flow under the bridge for Disney Plus’ Loki. The character we’ll see on screen is alive, younger, meaner, and with a lot less experience under his belt.
