Monster Hunter Stories 2 rare eggs are what to aim for when building the best Monstie squad. Rare Eggs are more likely to produce stronger Monsties, and while you can get by without endless research or spreadsheets, you’ll still need to factor in your genes for endgame and PvP challenges.
But even if you do get a rare egg, much of the genetic system comes down to chance. Anyway, this guide explains how to tell if an egg is rare, what its weight and smell mean, and how to increase your chances of getting a rare egg from Monster Hunter Stories 2, which is easier than you don’t think so.
Monster Hunter Stories 2 Eggs: How To Get Them
No matter what type of egg you want in Monster Hunter Stories 2, there’s only one way to get them – steal them from dens. Dens are random mini-dungeons scattered across the map outside of settlements. Each has a monster nest, and these contain one to three eggs, depending on the situation around the nest.
Nests related to story events – hunting a Pukei-Pukei, for example – will only have a single egg and are less likely to be rare. Your best chance of getting rare eggs is in random dens, as you can rummage around the nest and increase your chances of finding something better.
Monster Hunter Stories 2 smell and weight of eggs
The smell and weight determine the rarity of an egg. In Monster Hunter Stories 2, the rarity of an egg determines how many gene slots the hatched Monstie will have and the quality of genes it will receive.
The egg’s weight indicates how many of the nine genetic locations the Monstie may have, while its smell indicates the quality of the genes. In other words, Monsties from heavier eggs will have more genetic slots available, while Monsties from more fragrant eggs will generally have better active and passive skills.
There are three classifications for weight and three for smell. Navirou’s comments when you catch an egg can be confusing compared to how the Nursery categorizes them, but here’s how the game breaks down the two categories.
- Weight: Light, Normal, Heavy
- Feel: Normal, Good, Incredible
The ideal egg is heavy and smelly, although they are rarely found, even in rare monster dens. You could get a rare egg that only has a good smell, but is still light, for example. This is especially true in the early and mid-game. Don’t expect to get a full 3×3 grid with some good genes until you’ve progressed through the story a bit.
How to get rare eggs in Monster Hunter Stories 2
There are indeed three types of rare eggs indicated by the light that shines when you pick one from the nest. No light means a normal egg. Golden light denotes a rare egg, and the rainbow means you’ve (probably) found the rarest egg.
The rarest eggs have a rainbow gene. These make it easier to fill in a genetic line as they replace all types and elements of attack. Finding an egg with a bright rainbow halo doesn’t guarantee that it will actually have a rainbow gene, but it does mean the odds are higher.
You can find rare eggs in normal dens, but your best chance of finding rarer eggs is in rare dens.
One way to increase your chances of getting a better quality egg is to use a Collecting Charm at the Village Pot and offer a Research Prayer. Collecting charms increase your chances of finding rare items, and Seeking Prayer increases an egg’s chance of having rare genes.
