What is included in the Ninja Gaiden Master collection?

The 2021 Ninja Gaiden Remaster brings back three classic Ninja Gaiden titles:

  • Ninja Gaiden Sigma (2007)
  • Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (2009)
  • Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge (2012)
  • Original Gore / Decapitation as featured on PS3 titles
  • DLC: cosmetic outfits for all characters
  • Playable characters; Ayane, Rachel, Momiji and Katsumi
  • The Deluxe Edition adds a digital artbook and game soundtrack.
  • Tag missions playable in solo (difficulty adjusted accordingly)
  • “Hero Mode”: Casual game mode for inexperienced players

This means if you play all 3 titles you are watching at least 35 hours of gameplay if you go through the easiest difficulties and don’t bother with collectibles or extras. A finalist would probably spend at least 100 hours mastering all of the titles, which of course depends a lot on your abilities as the game is very skill-based.

If you are wondering why other headlines weren’t included: Data Loss. Much like Mass Effect Legendary Edition, the code for Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 2 is incomplete and cannot be “picked up” for remastering.

What is remastered

  • 4k resolution (excluding Switch and non-pro PS4)
  • 60FPS (excluding Switch and non-pro PS4)

What is not remastered

  • There is no multiplayer
  • The difficulty remains difficult
  • Gameplay and models remain the same
  • The fight remains the same
  • No improvement to PS5 or Xbox Series X features (HDR lighting, DualSense feedback, etc.)
  • The “Shadow of the World” “Clan Battle” for NINJA GAIDEN 3 Razer’s Edge is not included.
  • Online multiplayer is not available for ninja trials

Ninja Gaiden Master Collection Gameplay: Is It Fun?

So now that you know what’s included, we come to the key point of “Why should I play this?If you missed the original launch of these titles or are unfamiliar with the franchise, Ninja Gaiden is a series of complex action games evolved from an arcade title released in 1988. The Original Style of the series was rebooted in 2004 as an Xbox title. – with Team Ninja’s Tomonobu Itagaki taking his time to create what has been a smash hit in the action realm, now a 94 on Metacritic.

The games take you through the story of Ryu Hayabusa, the original badass ninjamurai. The chosen one of the Dragon Clan can run on walls, pole vault, zigzag in tight spaces to climb towers, swim AND he can run on water. All this while fighting a variety of humanoid, monster and mythical enemies, including giant Buddhist statues. If the antics of his agility aren’t quite appealing to you yet, the variety in Ryu’s arsenal might.

In addition to shurikens, Ryu can master many weapons including sword, double swords, scythes, bows, nunchaku, flails, war hammers, staves, and more. Each of these weapons come with special skills and combos that can be unlocked and mastered, giving the battle customization options on par with genre leader Devil May Cry. And of course no Ninja game would be complete without a little magic, so you can take some time and learn Ninpo to unleash elemental storms against your enemies and defeat them with fire, ice, wind and more. .

The combat loop can be interrupted on the fly for instant healing based on pause and weapon swaps, but in general the concept of the game is to relentlessly and smoothly slice through your opponents, often limb by limb. Flashy power-up attacks, aerial combos, guillotine throws, and kicks all add up to a fast-paced combat experience that proudly stands the test of time.

Outside of combat, the game features always frustrating camera exploration, letting you find special pearls to boost your health, scrolls to boost your ninpo, and several elixirs to heal while you play. You’ll also come across collectibles that you can take back to the blacksmith to unlock weapon upgrades and promotions. And of course, the remaster includes the ability to change outfits and even take on the role of busty waifus accompanist.

After explaining the setting, combat, and available content, we’re now down to the gaming experience itself. I started the second game first because my PS5 only listed this one. After some confusion, I finally realized that you have to click on the dots menu and select the other two titles, so don’t make the same mistake.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma immediately brought back a wave of nostalgia, as I remember trying this on the first Xbox and being amazed by the graphics and the combat, and incredibly frustrated with the difficulty. The graphics are okay for a remaster but don’t expect much since the models haven’t been redone. Combat is incredibly fun, but be prepared to be slightly frustrated with a confusing camera that allows you to both move it AND move on your own. It’s remarkably confusing and somewhat smelly until you finally get used to it.

On a related note, your fighting skills won’t be up to par and the game doesn’t fire any punches, so your first few encounters and levels won’t be glamorous or stylish. Ninja perfection comes with practice, and you have to be prepared to put in the time for it.

For me, the initial frustration with the dated camera and graphics was only surpassed by the frustration with myself for “forgetting how to play”, but the stubbornness that drove me to 100% all of these titles endure, and I was quickly sucked in. As I unlocked more combos and weapons, I wanted to perform better, finish fights faster, get more hits, and be more like the ninja Chad who gives Dante a run for his money.

I quickly noticed the many things the Nioh series inherited from Ninja Gaiden, and how Nioh’s excellent fighting variety can be attributed to the solid foundation of action Team Ninja learned with this title. I also spent some time thinking about how Sekiro has a few subtle touches of influence, with the Resurrection being sort of a scroll of awakening and the fluidity of movement sounding quite similar. Finally, the game is tough and reboots have that soulful feeling of “I’ll do better this time!” – so overall the game is a set of things that I enjoy.

It is sometimes difficult to revert to old games, especially if you have completed them before, so I asked other team members to try the game out to gauge their reaction. It was quite similar: frustration in front of the camera, apathy for graphics… and then addicted to combat. The games only feel better as you progress through the titles, with the many refinements added by Team Ninja in subsequent iterations. So, based on my experiments, newcomers to games will most certainly appreciate it, if they’re up for a challenge and willing to persist through a somewhat steep learning curve.

Ninja Gaiden Master Collection Review: Should You Buy It? Final thoughts

I was surprised to hear about the Ninja Gaiden Remaster, especially when Team Ninja seems to have moved on to Nioh, but given the success of Devil May Cry 5, I expect to see Ninja Gaiden 4 in the near future and this may be market preparation for that. Since I completely finished these games before, I wasn’t particularly keen on playing them again and it was only because we had a first code that I decided to jump in and do it. take a look.

It took a while for me to adjust, but once I did I was reminded of why I loved these titles so much, and I’m delighted to report that the fight has aged really well. The game is just plain fun to play and well worth the time for action fans as it remains one of the best in the genre. The modest price of $ 39.99 makes the games great value for money, giving you an action experience like few others can.

If you’re a fan of action games, enjoyed the challenge of Souls games, and wish Sekiro was a bit more action-oriented, Ninja Gaiden Master Collection is probably where you should be looking for your next solution.
