Path of Exile’s next expansion, Expedition, will release next Friday July 23 alongside Path of Exile: Royale. That’s right, the mode that was once April Fool’s Day come true is getting a lot more attention and real resources. While the new goodies will release July 23 for PC, console gamers on Xbox and PlayStation will have to wait until July 28 for release. Oh, and if you’re a longtime Path of Exile player, there’s something else that’ll really get you excited about this update – a redesign of the vial system.
First, Expedition tasks players with negotiating with the mysterious Kalguur. Players discover many hidden artifacts which they must return to their Kalguur owners for big rewards. Through intelligent use of explosives, players chart a strategic path to unearth these lost treasures. Of course, you will have to fight a lot of nasty enemies along the way. You can trade these resources with new vendors who allow you to haggle for great deals and deals.
A host of new skill gems bring new playstyles to Expedition and the larger game, perhaps the most interesting being a Necromancer Gem that allows players to play ‘all-in’ on a king-sized Reaper Minion. . Instead of commanding an entourage, this skill allows players to create a giant servant who manages everything. Want to play with other minions as well? Well, the Reaper sort of… eats them. So it’s going to be tough. Still, as a companion player, I can’t wait to try this one out.
Flasks can now be modified with new resources that add logic that controls their automatic use, instead of forcing players to blow their fingers (and invite carpal tunnel syndrome) on their hotkeys thousands of times per session. For example, you can set modifiers on a flask to trigger under a certain amount of health or when a state state is triggered. As someone who has had ulnar nerve issues in the past due to my repeated Sinister Strike spam emails in World of Warcraft, this update has been a long time coming and is low key the best thing about this expansion.
In addition to all of the expansion’s content, Path of Exile: Royale returns in weekend mode. It’s completely rebalanced outside of the core of Path of Exile, so the skill trees and player options will be very different. Yes, there will be a spectator mode, leaderboards and more.
