In Transformers: Heavy Metal, players will join a group known as the Guardian Network and team up with the Autobots to challenge the Decepticons. Players will discover hidden regions across the Earth to find resources and fight Decepticons in turn-based battles, Niantic said in a press release.

Transformers: Heavy Metal uses Niantic’s Lightship platform, the software that enables augmented reality applications to use real-time 3D mapping and multiplayer social experiences. Transformers: Heavy Metal can be played cooperatively with friends, Niantic said.
Niantic plans to launch the new Transformers game worldwide later this year. A soft launch will soon be available in some regions. The company is also working on a new AR game based on Nintendo’s Pikmin franchise to come in 2021.
