1. Barbed wire
As he wades through the dark night / early morning and pure white snow of Village’s post-prologue streak, Ethan encounters a barbed wire fence. Village precedent is instantly set here, as Ethan carelessly cuts off his left hand while using it to lift the thread and allow the rest of his body to pass safely. It’s a deep gash, as evidenced by Ethan lighting up his bleeding profusely palm, shortly before he’s forced to crawl across a dirty, blood-soaked wooden floor from a nearby shack he discovers. Let’s not even begin to imagine what infections he may have contracted.
2. The Lycan Chomp
That left hand gash would be a terrible day for anyone, but that’s just a footnote (hand note?) Into the rest of Ethan’s adventure. A little later, in the middle of the titular village, a pack of hungry Lycans pursues Ethan. One of the worst moments of this first encounter comes when Ethan believes he has taken refuge in the house of an older man armed with a shotgun, who unfortunately meets his end when a Lycan shoots him through the ceiling. .
But we’re not here to discuss this guy’s hands! Luckily for this story but not for Ethan, he is soon pulled below the house, into an area littered with corpses. In an attempt to escape, Ethan crawls over these rotting carcasses, only to see a faint apparition linger in the distance. Pressing forward, he leaps towards Ethan and snatches a piece of his hand, costing him his left pinky and ring finger.
3. The lycan catch
However, not all of the attacks on Ethan’s hands are scripted. While exploring the main center of the village, the wandering Lycans can surprise Ethan with an attack. Naturally, they cling to his wrist and prick the chinstrap with their sharp teeth. These are injuries Ethan can medicate away with and don’t result in any permanent loss of dexterity, but they certainly added insult to injury.
This next example is more of an injury that could have been, rather than an actual injury, but it’s still horrific for what Ethan, and by proxy, the players suffer. When kidnapped by Mother Miranda’s family at the start of the campaign, Ethan wakes up to find he is bound by horribly tight rusty metal handcuffs. They have clearly not been disinfected, but they are also obviously slavery devised by town resident Magneto Heisenberg. Ethan is forced to flee for his life through a dead glove of conveniently constructed traps, and the only way to escape certain death is to use Ethan’s bindings as protection against a spinning and spinning spike trap. speeding. Fortunately, the move not only saves Ethan’s life, but also allows him to move his arms independently of each other again. Finally, a moment of peace.
5. Cut and sip
But this peace will not last long! Lady Dimitrescu is the first main villain that Ethan faces in Village, a towering vampiric woman and the ruler of an austere town castle. She, of course, immediately kidnaps you as soon as she finds you running, and her daughters have opened their hands to her so that she can take a sip of blood. It’s a lot to deal with, but it’s rather tame compared to what happens immediately after.
Ethan is strained by – what else? – his palms via two giant hooks suspended from a castle ceiling. The hooks are sunk into his palms, holding him aloft in agony. Ethan, naturally the type who never worries about his hands, releases his first hand, letting the hook slice it. Rather than using that free hand to help him, you know, unhook the other, he also lets the hook lodged in that appendage tear as he uses the weight of his body to pull it freely and fall to the ground. ground. Oh but don’t worry, some well-placed medication nearby makes these injuries just a passing thought.
As in the photo, Ethan’s hand, at this point in the adventure, miraculously regenerated with Wolverine-worthy efficiency. But more issues are to come, and one of the ominous signs is that of a fly coming out of Ethan’s hand as he walks around Clue-like Lady Dimitrescu’s castle.
8. Devouring young girls
Flies are, of course, a disturbing sign when hiding within the village castle setting, as Lady Dimitrescu’s daughters can transform into a buzzing battalion at will. And like with the Lycans in town, there’s another unwritten opportunity for Ethan’s forearms to experience more pain. In this case, it’s yet another grab attack, as one of the girl’s razor-sharp claws dig under her skin as dilapidated teeth creep in for a quick bite.
9. The cutoff point
Slashed, chewed, handcuffed, slashed, drunk, hung up, covered in hungry flies – where else can Ethan’s hands go? Well, how about cutting it off completely. As Ethan pulls a lever through the damp, decrepit sewers of the Lady Dimitrescu Residence, the Matriarch sneaks up, severing his right hand in one of the village’s most effective spooky jumps. Ethan must then pick up the severed limb like an object, escape the lady as she pursues him, and then reattach it when you are safe. How? ‘Or’ What? You guessed it, this sweet green magic medicine bottle made of ground herbs and chemical fluid.
10. Haunted doll
In arguably the spookiest section of Resident Evil Village, Ethan finds himself groping unarmed in the dark, escaping an eerie sized baby and battling haunted dolls. It’s also, of course, a great place for some sort of damage to befall Ethan’s hands.
There are two separate instances. The first is a scripted script, which takes place during the closest thing in this section to a boss battle. During a duel with Donna Beneviento, Ethan must search among the vast collection of dolls for a very specific and cackling white. Whenever she is found, Ethan stabs her with scissors. However, on the first try, this porcelain nightmare takes a little bite out of your palm. It’s quick and certainly less garish than some of Ethan’s past shackles, but notable nonetheless.
11. Spider dolls
While searching for the specific doll in the stormy ocean of overwhelming, anxiety-provoking clicking sounds that occur around the house, if Ethan takes too long, other spider-shaped dolls will attack. These fearsome enemies flutter up the screen, and one of their attacks is a neat little skewer across the hand. Then they gently and thoughtfully dissipate to let Ethan continue this demonic game of hide and seek.

The latest illness to befall Ethan on his adventure through Resident Evil Village is also the most significant, coming in a pivotal reveal that explains both much of Village and 7’s history, and , more importantly, why his hands can take so much damage. While in a dream state, Ethan realizes that he has, all this time, been a copy of the authentic artifact. Ethan actually passed away when he arrived at the Baker Residence in Game 7.
What we’ve always played is a recreation of Mold with his memories intact. During this emotionally devastating moment, Ethan’s hands begin to transform into a living formation of endlessly squirming black tendrils – the Mold. Then he wakes up, his left hand still mutilated and his right hand having seen better days yet, but finally aware of how he endured all this pain. And also how this whole drug has probably been just a placebo all this time.
