Tokyo Olympics As many may have noticed, the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics included a set of video game music tracks during the Parade of Nations. With compositions from popular franchises such as Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter, and Sonic the Hedgehog, there was notably a serious lack of Nintendo representation. As the Japanese publication Bunshun reported, this was apparently due to last minute changes.
Leaked documentation reveals plans of Tokyo Olympics for the following tracks to have been played at the event; The Legend of Zelda theme, Super Mario Suite, Kirby Super Star Medley and the Pokémon opening. Meanwhile, American singer-songwriter Lady Gaga and Japanese comedian Naomi Watanabe were supposed to emerge from a Super Mario Warp Pipe, similar to Shinzo Abe‘s style at the closing ceremony of the 2016 Olympics. Disappointingly. , these ideas were dropped due to offensive and controversial statements by composition organizer Keigo Oyamada and show director Kentaro Kobayashi resulting in their forced resignations. Changes were made quickly “just before the show” and Nintendo’s initial involvement was dropped. When asked to comment on the situation, Nintendo replied “we are unable to respond”.
