“We got the win, but we certainly didn’t play well… I’m disappointed with how we’ve played the last two games. We’re in a good position in the league, but we know how quickly that can change. ”

Catalan leaders Dragons maintained their best Super League start to the season with a first win at Mend-A-Hose Jungle in nine years, but coach Steve McNamara was not happy with their performance.

The French side, which were deprived of English duo Sam Tomkins and Tom Davies, dominated much of the match as they won 16-6 over Challenge Cup finalists Castleford to extend their winning streak to six matches.

“We got the win, but we certainly didn’t play well tonight,” McNamara said.

“It’s been 2012 since we haven’t won here and I know the two teams weren’t strong, but I’m disappointed with the way we played the last two games.

“I am also happy that we ended up on the good side in terms of results. We lost a bit of pace but we are scratching the victories, which is positive for us.

“We’re in a good position in the league, but we know how quickly that can change.”

The Catalans return to England next Wednesday for a game against Huddersfield and are not expected to return to Perpignan until July 16 after their next scheduled home game against Hull KR was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the camp of the Robins.

A total of six Super League games have so far been lost due to the pandemic in 2021, but McNamara is trying to stay positive.

“We have to find solutions,” he said. “Last season was confusing but we still ended up with a big final.

“I’m sure we’ll get to the end point, but we’ll have to be patient and adapt.

“Losing our next scheduled home game is a huge blow for the club. We have played 12 games so far and nine of them have been in England so we’ve been through quite a bit and we have two more at outside travel. ”

Castleford has now lost five of his last six league games, but was once again well below his strength.

They had Paul McShane serving in England and Peter Mata’utia and Suaia Matagi with the All Stars and, with Jordan Turner retiring late with a hamstring injury, coach Daryl Powell opted to start with pillar Liam Watts at the stand-off.

Watts fought manly under difficult circumstances but the home side struggled to get creative and led 14-0 when winger Derrell Olpherts scored his only try with four minutes remaining.

“I’m pretty proud of the boys,” Powell said. “It’s clear we had Watts at the mid-back so you can see what our squad is like right now.

“It’s frustrating offensively, but they’re the greatest team in the competition and I think we handled them pretty well. Physically I thought we were awesome.

“It’s difficult when you have 11 or 12 players who are not playing, you just have to hang on.

“We will take a lot out of tonight’s game defensively. We have to move to St Helens next week as we hope to get some players back.”

Powell says winger Jason Quarequare took part in the final training session before being ruled out as a Covid contact, while hooker Jacques O’Neill suffered a hamstring injury and second rower Alex Foster will go take x-rays after taking a facial blow.

“It’s crazy, the number of injuries and what we expect from our players,” added Powell.
