Top 5 upcoming RPGs for July 2021 (The Ascent, Monster Hunter Stories 2, Ys IX Monstrum Nox and more!)
June has come and gone with a number of announcements with the E3 season providing plenty of news on the games to come. However, if you’re looking for titles coming out a bit earlier than next year, we’ve got you covered as there are still a number of RPGs coming out in 2021. This July is a mix of RPG titles released on new platforms, offering challenging fights like souls, a cyberpunk setting, and even a new turn-based monster entry that comes straight to you. Without further ado, let’s move into the month of July 2021!
Honorable mention: Ys XI Monstrum Nox

Our honorable mention this month is Ys XI Monstrum Nox. If this title sounds familiar to you, it’s because this Action-RPG was released earlier this year on Playstation 4, but is now releasing on Nintendo Switch and PC platforms in July.
This is the ninth entry in the series, which follows the adventurer known as Adol “the red” Christin and his companion Dogi as they arrive in Balduq. Things quickly turn south when Adol is imprisoned after entering the city. But this leads him to meet a mysterious woman named April who transforms him into a Monstrum, endowed with supernatural gifts and the power to exorcise monsters. By teaming up with other Monstrums, Adol will defeat threats in the dark dimension called Grimwald Nox.
Each of the characters in this title has their own unique fighting skills. There are goodies like Heaven’s Run which lets you effortlessly climb buildings and explore new paths in dungeons and more. Combat is a complete hack and slash, with a number of unique character abilities to suit different play styles.
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox releases on Switch, PC, and Stadia on July 6.
5. Older souls

This soul-like indie track brings its own soul flavor with a Boss-Rush experience. Eldest Souls follows humanity by ultimately saying more to bondage and rebelling against the Old Gods, imprisoning them within the sacred walls of the Citadel. Of course, this does not suit them as they demand revenge, triggering a great resolution on the world, leaving humanity to fade away. It leaves a glimmer of hope, only one warrior to save humanity.
Eldest Souls promises fast and challenging battles, where every moment counts. Enjoy brutal battles with a boss-rush experience, where you will engage in the most difficult fights, with each of the Old Gods, offering new and unique challenges one after another.
The game is set in a 2D pixel art style from top to bottom, with some pretty detailed dark fantasy locations and even destructible objects to crush. You have a range of talents and abilities to unlock, with a number of combinations to perfect your fighting style.
Older souls releases on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, and Switch on July 29.
4. Swords of legends online
Release date: July 9th
Developer: Wangyuan Shengtang Entertainment Technology
A blockbuster Action-RPG MMO from China is coming to the West this month as Swords of Legends Online. Described as a “fully remastered and improved” version of the game, which will explore the timeless war between the sides of light and dark. The game features sound cutscenes and a beautiful, fantastic open world to explore.
Swords of Legends Online will offer players six classes, Reaper, Summoner, Bard, Spellsword, Berserker, and Spearmaster. There are also two specializations per class as the game progresses, which means other powerful skills and abilities to unlock. These skills include mystical powers and the ability to dodge and combine your attacks, easily switching between enemies with tabbing combat.
Players will experience the action in single player quests and multiplayer dungeons. There are also 20 player raids and PvP modes, all themed around Chinese legends and mythology. The MMO also has housing for players, so when you’re not getting into the action, you can relax on your own floating island with a lot of customization.

Chernobylite is a survival RPG, mixing free exploration and non-linear story. It takes place in the Zone, an area suffering from the after-effects of the Chernobyl power plant explosion. But the interesting thing about this consequence game is that you might not see the result right away, but after a while.
Players will take on the role of a former employee of a power plant, who investigates the mysterious disappearance of your loved one. Survival, conspiracy, mingling of horror and “obsession”. You will also have to rely on your companions to survive, building a team capable of crossing this dangerous zone. Keep your cool because all might not be what it seems.
The survival RPG features challenging combat, crafting, and a non-linear sci-fi story. By forming your team, you will discover the secrets of Chernobyl. Go there with guns or take a more stealthy approach, it’s all up to you.
Chernobylite is currently in Early Access on Steam and will launch on PC via Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG on July 28, 2021. The PS4 and Xbox One versions will be released in summer 2021.
2. Monster Hunter Stories 2 Wings of Ruin

As the grandson of a legendary horseman, the story follows a fateful encounter with Ena, a Wyverian girl loaded with an egg. This egg has the potential to hatch into a legendary Rathalos, but has the potential to wreak havoc if its inner power is awakened.
This turn-based RPG will allow players to hatch their own Monsties and even mix their DNA through The Rite of Channeling. Find rare Monsties in the field and hatch the elusive monster eggs with hard-to-find genes. These Monsties will accompany you in the world in real time as well as in combat by bringing special skills and powers.
In battle, you can choose from three types of turn-based attacks, Power, Speed, and Technique, which stem from the original Monster Hunter Stories game. Master your weapon type, use your skills while fighting iconic monsters from the series.

Our top spot this month goes to The Ascent, a single-player, co-op Action-RPG set in a sci-fi world where a self-contained, corporate-run metropolis is filled with a number of creatures from across the galaxy. . For some reason, The Ascent Group is to be shut down, and the struggle for survival begins, with rival companies and crime syndicates seeking to take hold. Players will take on the role of defense, trying to fend off invading enemies.
The Ascent offers both a single player and co-op experience with up to four players. You can go it alone or team up with three other friends for online cooperation. This game is action-packed, with classic RPG mechanics that will allow players to create their own characters, customizing everything from cyberware to weapons.
The world has impressive levels of verticality, located in a giant skyscraper, as you can freely roam the dilapidated world. There are a lot of cyberware customizations associated with shooting and loot gameplay. The action is fast-paced and there are a lot of enemies to take down and interactive environments, with things that can explode.
Ascension Comes to PC, Xbox Series X | S, and Xbox One consoles on July 29.
