Severe flooding destroyed a hotel in the town of Puerta Vallarta, killing a Spanish teenager.

Tropical Storm Nora continues to hit Mexico’s Pacific coast with torrential rains and high winds, a day after causing flooding and landslides that killed at least one person at a popular resort town.

Communities in the coastal states of Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco experienced heavy rains and violent waves on Sunday as the storm moved north along the shore.

The state government of Jalisco said a Spanish teenager died on Saturday night when a hotel partially collapsed in the city of Puerto Vallarta amid severe flooding when Nora passed through the tourist town as a Category 1 hurricane.

The rest of his family escaped before the collapse, authorities said.

“This tragedy was caused by the partial collapse of a hotel in downtown Puerto Vallarta, due to the overflow of the Cuale River,” said Governor of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro. “To his family, who came to our port from Spain seven years ago, and to his loved ones, all our support and our deepest condolences. TEAR.”

A woman also disappeared there after her car was washed away. Authorities said flooding damaged 500 homes and two people were injured in a landslide.

Six fishermen from the state of Guerrero were reported missing at sea.

Nora was demoted from a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale to a tropical storm Sunday afternoon, after her maximum sustained winds fell to 70 miles per hour (110 km / h).

The storm was about 105 miles (165 km) northeast of the city of Mazatlan on Sunday night and was moving northwest at 12 mph (19 km / h), according to the States National Hurricane Center (NHC) -United. It was blowing at 60 mph (96 km / h) with higher gusts.

“A gradual weakening is expected over the next few days as the center moves roughly parallel to the Mexican coast,” NHC said. “However, a rapid weakening is likely to occur if the center moves inland earlier than expected.”

The NHC said Nora will likely produce additional heavy rainfall along Mexico’s west coast from Jalisco states to Sonora through the end of the week.

It could also produce potentially fatal flash floods and mudslides, as well as storm surges and large waves.

Hurricane Grace killed eight people last week after hitting Veracruz.
