Vikings assistant coach Rick Dennison out after refusing COVID-19 vaccine, per report
Rick Dennison was unlucky, and now he’s out of work.
Dennison, the Vikings’ assistant coach and the team’s running game coordinator, is absent after refusing to receive the coronavirus vaccine, according to Courtney Cronin of ESPN.
It is not clear from Cronin’s report whether Dennison left alone or was fired, but Cronin notes that he is the first coach to “leave his team” amid a refusal of the vaccine. (UPDATE: Patriots co-offensive line coach Cole Popovich will not be with the team in 2021, Boston Globe’s Jim McBride reported on Friday. It is not clear if Popovich refused to be vaccinated.)
The Vikings said in a statement on Friday after Cronin’s report that they were in “talks” with Dennison over COVID-19 protocols. “At this time, Coach Dennison does not have an exemption from the vaccine requirements of these protocols. We will comply with the requirements of the protocols and all applicable laws,” the team said.
NFL rules dictate that all Level 1 employees – coaches, players – must be vaccinated or lose team-related privileges, such as access to the field. All Level 1 employees must provide valid medical or religious reasons for refusing the vaccine.

NFL chief medical officer Dr Allen Sills recently said that 80% of NFL players have received at least one injection of the vaccine, which has been shown to be safe and effective in preventing severe cases of coronavirus and hospitalizations. .
Dr Sills also revealed that seven teams are above the 90 percent immunization threshold, with five teams below 70 percent. The magic number for the restrictions to be lifted between teams is 85%.
