Zendaya And Timothée Chalamet Became Besties On Dune Set
“We were like, ‘Oh that’s great we’re going to be the best, I can say that,’” Zendaya said.
Am I too invested in this friendship between two people who are complete strangers to me outside of their public figures and who know nothing about me? Certainly! Do I care about the optics of this reality? How dare you say such a thing!
Either way, the reigning King and Queen of young Hollywood graced the covers of Weekly entertainment this week, and were joined by their co-stars and director Denis Villeneuve to talk about the dynamics of the cast and directing of the larger-than-life sci-fi film.
As you know, the 2021 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic novel follows Paul Atreides (that’s Timmy) as he and his family establish a stronghold on the harsh desert planet of Arrakis, aka Dune. Heir to House Atreides, he is moved by haunting visions of Chani (the one and only Zendaya), a Fremen warrior who warns of great upheavals to come. Oh, and did I forget to mention that they’re love interests too?
Speaking in an exclusive interview with EW, Zendaya explained how she immediately clicked with Timothy and the rest of the cast. “I didn’t want to leave,” she said, recounting that she had only been on set for a week. “Denis had such warmth, and there was a family side to how I felt when I arrived. I felt very welcome by the crew and the cast, everyone was so lovely to me … I got really close to Timothy. We were like, ‘Oh, that’s great, we’re going to be the best, I can say that.’ “
The Spider Man The star also shared that she would love to film a sequel to the film, as the dense nature of the novel forced Denis to split the narrative in two. “There are so many stories to tell. I would love to spend more time with these characters,” she explained. “I learned so much as an actress and I got better thanks to this experience of being with Denis, of watching him interact with his actors and directing sets.”
“I have also become wonderful friends with Timothy, who is now like my family I would say,” she continued. “We talk all the time about how it’s going to be fun if we can do it. Selfishly I want to do [a second film] to have fun and spend time with my friend. “
The 25-year-old actors have previously spoken of their close friendship and mutual admiration for each other’s talents. And by “mutual admiration” I mean absolutely gushing over each other like the stans they are.
In a joint interview with E!, Zendaya said the two will be “lifelong friends”. Meanwhile, Timmy praised his appearance on the red carpet, saying, “She’s killing him!” (It’s true.)
And who could forget that, the smoothest Twitter interaction that ever existed:
Well, it came from me! For my part, I will certainly stay on the pace of the Zendaya-Timothée friendship (platonic ship name Zentheus? Timdaya?) And live vicariously through both.
